Journey to Leadership: Guided by Mentors and Purpose

My journey to leading Killeen ISD’s high schools has been shaped by mentors and colleagues who modeled excellence, integrity and compassion. From classroom teacher to campus principal to district leader, each role strengthened my belief that iron sharpens iron: the best teams grow when diverse strengths and perspectives challenge one another.

I try to build teams where differences are valued, conversations are real and collective strengths move us forward. Equally important is being a strong teammate by bringing perspective, leaning into the storming and norming and contributing to the team’s shared direction. Those experiences keep me grounded in collaboration, service and continuous improvement. High-quality education isn’t just a goal; it’s a moral calling and the backbone of a thriving community. It’s a privilege to lead that work alongside people who make each other better.

Transforming Learning: Strengthening Classrooms through Support and Clarity

Teaching today requires extraordinary precision and heart. Our teachers face the daily challenge of meeting the needs of every student while ensuring all learners reach rigorous grade-level standards. They’re truly engineers of learning crafting experiences that spark curiosity and accelerate growth for all students.

Building School Culture: Vision, Trust and Shared Responsibility

For me, a positive, high-performing school starts with three things: a clear vision, deep trust and shared responsibility. Educators today face complex challenges, so it’s critical to build environments where staff feel supported, valued and united around a common purpose.

When leaders are transparent, celebrate teamwork and give consistent feedback, people see that trust and accountability can truly coexist. This work is demanding and absolutely worth it. When teachers know they’re not in this grind alone, they rediscover and connect with the purpose that brought them into education in the first place.

Leading Through Uncertainty: Systems That Create Clarity and Care

When times are uncertain, clarity matters most. Strong systems keep people and processes connected so that operations continue to run smoothly, even when challenges arise. Every procedure should be designed with empathy. Consider how it will feel for students, families and staff experiencing school in this way. Ensure everyone is supported through clear, consistent communication.

Collaboration across departments and a culture of continuous improvement help us stay responsive while maintaining stability. That alignment of people and resources keeps our schools safe, supportive and centered on students.

Driving Innovation: Expanding Pathways and Personalizing Progress

Killeen ISD offers a wide range of opportunities for students to prepare for life beyond graduation through strong college, career and technical pathways. In earlier roles, I helped expand our Career and Technical Education programs, Advanced Academics, Dual Credit, Early College and STEM Academies so that every student could access rigorous, relevant learning with little or no financial barrier.

More than just expanding programs, we focused on helping students identify their goals and design personalized paths to reach them. Choosing courses and building a graduation plan shouldn’t just check boxes, it should open doors. Using regular data reviews, campuses track enrollment trends, dual-credit success and industry certifications to adjust support and close gaps. It all reflects our belief that every student deserves a clear, supported path to a thriving future.

Developing Future Leaders: Building Capacity and Confidence Together

Leadership in the future will demand agility, emotional intelligence and the ability to lead through change with clarity and heart. The challenges facing schools are evolving from technology shifts to student well-being and workforce readiness and our leaders must be prepared to navigate that complexity with confidence and purpose. No one naturally steps into the principalship “ready” for the challenges and complexity of the role.

At Killeen ISD, we’re intentionally cultivating that readiness through mentoring, coaching and authentic leadership development. Our approach moves beyond theory into real practice, helping leaders analyze data, build culture and lead instruction with precision. We foster reflective growth, adaptability and a mindset that values learning while leading.

I’m grateful to be part of an incredible team of leaders committed to growing others building capacity, nurturing confidence and ensuring every leader in our system is equipped to serve with excellence. Our goal is not just to prepare leaders for today’s challenges, but to develop resilient, innovative thinkers who can guide schools into the future with courage and purpose.

Advice for Leaders: Balancing Care, Conviction and Accountability

Stay grounded in purpose and lead with conviction about the long-term impact of your work. While curriculum and learning models will change, the need for strong, ethical and capable citizens never will. The real challenge and reward of leadership is balancing care and accountability: holding people to high expectations while still developing and sustaining them. Education isn’t a short-term pursuit; it’s a lifelong commitment to preparing a skilled and compassionate generation for the future.
