Insights about Professional Journey and Current Responsibilities

As a purpose-driven education leader, I provide meaningful, inclusive, and student-centered opportunities that help students build strong and informed futures. With a professional background spanning law, business, and education, I believe deeply in the unlimited potential of every student.

My academic background includes completion of pre-medical requirements, a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Southern California, and a J.D. from the USC Gould School of Law, where I served as president of my law school class.

Starting my professional career in corporate law, I transitioned into education, driven by a passion for mentoring and supporting young people. Fifteen years ago, I joined Tempe Preparatory Academy as a College Counselor with the goal of expanding postsecondary opportunities for students. Currently as the Director of College Counseling, my work focuses on helping students pursue a wide range of college and career pathways, including highly competitive colleges and universities, prestigious scholarships, trade programs, and military options.

Creating Transformative Shifts in Student Outcomes

When I joined, the school did not offer dual enrollment college credit opportunities or AP testing. Driven by a commitment to educational equity and expanding access to rigorous academics, I founded and led multiple high-impact programs that significantly broaden students’ postsecondary pathways.

Most notably, I designed and launched the school’s Dual Enrollment College Credit Program, through which students now graduate with up to 40 units of transferable college credit. Establishing and managing partnerships with postsecondary institutions, I collaborated with faculty to align curriculum and academic standards, advised students and families on early college pathways, and oversaw all operational, compliance, and instructional components to ensure both rigor and equitable access.

In addition, I founded and managed the school’s AP Testing Program and several nationally recognized enrichment initiatives. As the founder of the AFS International Studies Club, I led the academy to earn the 2025 national Outstanding AFS Club award and designation as a U.S. Department of State Medallion School. Through this program, the school hosts State Department– sponsored exchange students and sends students abroad on full scholarships, with alumni going on to attend institutions such as Stanford, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton). I also established the school’s County Teen Court Program, providing hundreds of students with experiential learning in civic engagement, legal reasoning, and restorative justice.

Further expanding student leadership and recognition opportunities, I led the school’s chapters of the National Honor Society and U.S. Congressional Award Program. The latter offers an inclusive, non-competitive framework through which students set meaningful service and personal development goals, with multiple students earning Congress’s highest youth honor each year. To further inspire long-term academic aspiration, I created the school’s Academic Hall of Fame to highlight clear, attainable pathways to major distinctions and scholarships like National Merit Finalist, All-State Musician, and Academic All-American in Speech and Debate so students and families can envision success from an early age.

The measurable outcomes of this work include over 150 students earning The Congressional Award, sustained success with Ivy League and other top-tier college placements, and national recognition from organizations such as AFS USA and The Congressional Award Board of Directors. Most recently, the Class of 2025 alone completed more than 6,000 hours of community service and earned over $10 million in scholarship offers from 88 colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad, demonstrating the lasting academic, civic, and financial impact of these programs.

Supporting High Achievement without Sacrificing Wellbeing

High-achieving environments can place significant pressure on students, especially during the college admissions process. I believe it’s essential to meet students where they are and help them define success in a way that aligns with their values, strengths, and long-term goals. Rather than focusing on rankings or outcomes that benefit the institution, my approach prioritizes finding the best fit for each individual student.

Working closely with students ensures they feel supported throughout the process. By emphasizing personal growth, readiness, and balance, students are better able to pursue competitive opportunities without compromising their mental health or intrinsic motivation. This individualized approach helps students remain grounded and confident as they navigate important decisions.

Expanding Pathways through Global and Non-traditional Opportunities

Engaging personally with every student, I host a wide range of events designed to help students and parents navigate the college admissions process. A key part of my work involves encouraging students to explore global learning opportunities and non-traditional routes that align with their long-term goals. I actively guide student participation in fully funded U.S. State Department programs like NSLI-Y, CBYX, Youth Ambassadors Exchange, and Sister Cities exchanges. These opportunities help students clarify long-term academic and career goals, build global competency and independence, and strengthen their college, scholarship, internship, and job applications.

Preparing Students for an AI-Influenced Admissions

While I am not in the classroom working directly with students on AI instruction, I have been deeply involved in developing a responsible AI essay reviewer in partnership with an education-focused startup. This provides students with safe, responsible, and ethical AI support as they write college and scholarship application essays. As many students are already using open AI tools that rewrite their essays, it is important to offer responsible AI platforms that will review the essays like a teacher or coach without changing their content or voice.

This work is especially meaningful to me because many of my students are first-generation Americans and first-generation college applicants. They often don’t have access to someone at home who can review an essay or provide feedback. A responsible, Socratic-style AI essay reviewer can help level the playing field without compromising academic integrity.

Guidance for Building Equitable, High-Impact Counseling Programs

My advice to other Directors of College Counseling is to prioritize knowing students personally and to not be afraid to implement programs that expand opportunity. Many of the most impactful initiatives I’ve built began with recognizing a need and taking steps to remove barriers, particularly financial ones.

Fully funded, high-impact programs allow students to pursue opportunities they may not have thought possible. I’ve learned that meaningful change often comes from initiative and persistence. When educators commit to access, equity, and long-term support, students are empowered to pursue paths that align with their potential and goals, and that commitment defines the true impact of this work.
