Dr. Robert Dillon has served as a thought leader in education for the past twenty-five years, working as a teacher, principal and director of innovation. He is passionate about transforming the educational landscape by creating engaging, high-quality schools for all students.
Dr. Dillon is part of the Leadership Team for Connected Learning, a Saint Louis-based organization focused on reshaping professional development to meet today's needs. He has spoken at local, state and national conferences across the country and has shared his insights in various publications. He is the author of several books on intentional design in learning, including Leading Connected Classrooms, Engage, Empower, Energize: Leading Tomorrow's Schools Today, Redesigning Learning Space, The Space: A Guide for Educators, The Space: A Guide for Leaders, and Powerful Parent Partnerships.
Fostering Cross-Departmental Collaboration, Community Engagement, and the Integration of AI to Empower Modern Learning"
One of the unique aspects of my role in University City is leading cross-departmental projects. In many school districts, departments often operate in silos, struggling to communicate effectively and to undertake complex initiatives that lie at the intersection of finance, technology, curriculum and communication. For the past few years, my work has focused on breaking down these barriers and fostering collaboration across these areas.
When I think about innovation, I envision it as a series of lightning-like brushfires. Creating the right conditions from the top down is crucial. This involves engaging a diverse group of stakeholders—teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals and others who spend the most time with students—to encourage them to think differently about their practices. At the same time, it's essential to cultivate a culture that embraces innovation, allowing people to explore new ideas and practices without feeling forced. Specifically, I believe that technology and artificial intelligence will drive this innovation and we must ensure that it happens on our terms.

Currently, one of the most pressing challenges we face is time. The complexity of teaching has increased, yet the amount of time available has not. As we ask teachers to take on more responsibilities—whether with larger class sizes, additional curricular demands or more complex instructional and assessment opportunities—we must also provide adequate time for teacher learning, reflection and the cross-pollination of ideas. A significant struggle for leaders is managing both external and internal noise, ensuring that what remains is productive and positive.
In a positive turn, we see more individuals examining research on learning and integrating those insights into their practices, moving away from traditional methods based solely on habit or comfort.
When considering sustainability, I view it through the lens of people, place and planet. While planetary sustainability is vital—encompassing how we source and dispose of materials and digitize processes—our primary goal is to create economically sustainable communities. We strive to support our people through challenging times, addressing issues related to mental and physical health. Retaining our staff and ensuring their well-being and effectiveness is a key focus.
University City has numerous community partnerships, which I consider a significant strength. One of my favorites is City in Bloom, which ensures that the areas surrounding our buildings create a beautiful and inspiring environment for our students. Our partnership with local police has also been fruitful, as we work together to foster a supportive relationship rather than one of division. Additionally, we actively engage a diverse array of small business owners, incorporating their insights into our initiatives.
Regarding AI, I see many individuals leveraging it to enhance efficiency and act as a multiplier of time. While its full integration into the learning model is still evolving, it has certainly assisted some of our teachers with administrative tasks, streamlining bureaucracy. We're also beginning to use AI to analyze data sets and glean valuable insights.
Looking ahead, our challenge lies in simplifying complex issues. We need to ensure that our funding sources are sustainable and ever-renewable, and that our community comprehensively understands what modern learning entails.
