Ray Nangle, Co-Founder and Ger Killian, Co-FounderWhen Ireland began exploring hot school meals, The Lunch Bag identified the limitations of existing approaches. Instead of adapting an unsuitable system, the company developed a central production approach that prepares meals efficiently and delivers them to schools for regeneration.
“We wanted to change a culture,” Killian explains, highlighting the company’s wider ambition beyond simply providing food. The Lunch Bag built an ecosystem focused on educated eating, where children, families, and schools are connected through technology, nutrition, and community engagement.
Technology Driving Personalised Nutrition
The company operates from a 75,000 sq ft facility in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, sourcing quality ingredients, with a focus on Irish suppliers. Its bespoke multilingual app allows families to choose from daily meal options while managing dietary requirements. Allergen information is integrated into the ordering process, ensuring unsuitable choices are automatically removed.
The data-driven ordering system supports sustainability by improving stock accuracy and reducing food waste. The Lunch Bag balances efficiency with environmental responsibility.
Nutritional information and detailed breakdowns are available to parents and children on the app and the website. Meals are designed to be low in salt, sugar, and fat, while familiar favourites are reformulated with healthier ingredients. Children receive detailed nutritional information through the app. The company also developed the Poe Project, an online educational resource that helps children understand what goes into their meals.
Building Safer and Smarter School Meal Delivery
Beyond food preparation, The Lunch Bag has invested heavily in logistics and safety. Automated processes support accurate meal assembly, allergen management, and portion control. Each meal is labelled for an individual child.
The company produces more than 18,000 meals per hour and uses a nationwide refrigerated delivery network to reach schools. Its regeneration system allows schools to serve hot meals with minimal staffing requirements.

We are very keen to see how we could improve the service for other providers across the world.
“We are very keen to see how we could improve the service for other providers across the world,” Killian says, reflecting the company’s ambition to share its expertise beyond Ireland. The Lunch Bag also works with local communities, creating solutions for smaller rural schools through community heating hubs and partnerships with local sporting clubs.
A Vision for Global Impact
For parents, the service offers flexibility through the app, allowing order changes, absence adjustments, and reminders that help families reduce unnecessary food purchasing.
With almost 2,000 employees and meals reaching more than 200,000 children daily, The Lunch Bag has grown rapidly since its founding in 2019. Its child-centred approach has positioned the company as a significant force in the evolution of school meal services.
The Lunch Bag has been named as Top School Meals Provider in Europe 2026, recognising its contribution to innovation, sustainability, food education, and safe meal delivery. “Sustainability, food reformulation, allergen safety, community integration and food education are all aspects of school meals that need to be to the fore,” Killian says.
Through its unique combination of technology, nutrition, and community focus, The Lunch Bag continues to demonstrate how school meals can become more than a service. The company’s model offers a blueprint for a future where every child can access healthy, personalised, and thoughtfully prepared meals.
The company’s continued expansion reflects a commitment to improving school dining experiences while sharing valuable insights with providers worldwide. By combining innovation with practical delivery solutions, The Lunch Bag continues to inspire a new standard for accessible and nutritious school meals.
