In a city where private school admissions have become increasingly competitive, The Compass School of Texas offers a refreshing new path. Founded three years ago, it responds to the growing need for high-quality, co-educational, non-denominational private schools in Dallas.

Shelly Sender, head of school, with over 44 years in education, leads the school, combining rigorous academics with outdoor learning, global awareness, and life skills. Compass aims to prepare students not only for academic success but for thoughtful living, critical thinking, and meaningful contributions to their communities.

Compass was created to address the need for more private school options, offering a well-rounded education that fosters personal growth and responsibility.

“Our entire curriculum, our entire culture, is very purposeful. We want children to know their pursuit of purpose and their impact on the broader community,” says Sender.

Education with Intention and Focus

Compass believes education should be meaningful and connected to the real world. A science concept may begin with observation, move to the garden for testing, continue in the kitchen for application, and end with a reflection shared with families. Understanding is practiced, not just recited, and the rhythm holds in all weather. Light rain calls for boots, not cancellations, so students revise plans and adapt their thinking across subjects like math, art, and reading.

The school blends academic instruction with daily time outdoors. Through the farm-to-table program, students plant, harvest, and cook while learning about nutrition, science, and ecosystems. They also care for chickens and manage composting, instilling responsibility into daily practice. Spanish is taught daily, where students learn grammar, phonics, and the cultures of 21 Spanish-speaking countries.

In addition to academics, Compass teaches financial literacy, resilience, and leadership. These life skills are integrated into the school’s project-based learning, where students tackle real-world challenges, collaborate, and develop responsibility and self-awareness. Core values like family, community, and leadership guide every lesson, helping students grow into thoughtful, purpose-driven individuals.

Fostering Confidence, Curiosity, and Growth

  • Our entire curriculum, our entire culture, is very purposeful. We want children to know their pursuit of purpose and their impact on the broader community.

In the “Change of Heart” unit, students explored the human circulatory system through literature, science, and hands-on experimentation. This year they focused on the heart through beautiful essays. They expanded their knowledge through an expert guest speaker who is a Compass parent in the medical field, and presented their findings to peers and families, reinforcing their understanding and boosting confidence.

Public speaking is a cornerstone of the Compass experience. Through Gratitude Gatherings, students share their learning with families and peers, building poise, communication skills, and confidence. Presenting to real audiences helps students articulate their ideas clearly, an essential skill for life.

The school also fosters community engagement through Fireside Chats, where civic and business leaders share their expertise and applicable strategies to further education, themed around Compass’s core values, for the school’s adult community. For example, experts in finance Rob Kaplan and Peter Brundage recently spoke at Old Parkland to community attendees. In addition to this, Compass hosts a Spanish spelling bee, born from the excitement of learning Spanish daily, as a way for students to showcase their knowledge through friendly competition, it now includes other schools in Dallas.
