Tribal colleges in the U.S. began emerging in the 1970s as part of federal legislation that allowed Native American Tribes to establish their own institutions of higher learning. Being one of 37 tribal colleges nationwide, and one of only three in Arizona, San Carlos Apache College serves the San Carlos Apache Tribe, a vibrant community of around 13,000 members, of whom approximately 10,000 live on or near the reservation. After battling addiction, she found recovery and enrolled at San Carlos Apache College. With the support of her faculty and peers, she not only earned her degree but also graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Independence and Accreditation

The College is in the process of separating from its partner institution, Tohono O’odham Community College, and is actively working toward obtaining its own accreditation. This will allow the College to operate as an independent institution and provide it with the autonomy needed to make decisions that best serve its students and community.

In the next 18 to 24 months, San Carlos Apache College plans to submit its candidacy papers for full accreditation with a Department of Education approved agency. Achieving this milestone will open new opportunities for the College, including eligibility for federal funding programs such as Pell Grants, which will help support students’ educational costs.

Dr. Warner is confident that the College will achieve full accreditation and stand on its own. “We’re making great strides toward becoming an independent institution,” she says. “We’ve already separated our finances from the Tribe; an initial but significant milestone. This will ensure that we continue to provide high-quality education to our students and remain a vital resource for the San Carlos Apache Tribe.”

“In our culture, women are the keepers of the traditions,” explains Dr. Warner. “So, it’s incredibly significant that the majority of our students are young women who are poised to become the next generation of leaders in their communities.”

San Carlos Apache College also provides free tuition and books for its students, a rare benefit in today’s educational landscape. This policy is made possible by the support of the college’s Board of Regents, which is committed to making higher education accessible to Apache students. This unique approach ensures that students from low-income families can pursue their educational dreams without the burden of tuition fees or textbook costs.
