Providing that environment is the purpose behind Madrona Independent School, a K–8 school dedicated to bright, gifted and twice-exceptional learners. Located in Kitsilano, the school is built on the belief that every child has distinct strengths and meaningful stretches, and that education works best when both are recognized.

“We recognize the full complexity of a child,” says Jason Camp, head of school. “When differences are understood and strengths are nurtured, students begin to feel capable again and families feel genuinely seen.”

This commitment to understanding the whole child begins even before enrollment. Madrona follows a thoughtful, fit-focused admissions process designed to ensure alignment between the student, the family, and the school. Families begin with in-depth conversations about their child’s learning profile, followed by two to three experience days in which students participate in classroom life and daily routines. Throughout the process, families work closely with Junie Brayley, director of teaching and learning, to assess readiness, support needs, and overall fit, placing long-term success ahead of quick enrollment decisions.

Once enrolled, the same attention is put into practice through a small, close-knit community of just over 50 students. Class sizes of five to ten allow for highly personalized learning, flexible scheduling, and strong relationships. Students are known well by every adult in the building, not just their classroom teacher and collaboration among staff is constant. Faculty meet regularly to discuss each child’s progress, strengths, and areas of growth, ensuring learning remains responsive and meaningful.

Purposeful learning sits at the center of Madrona’s academic approach. Curriculum is blended across subjects, allowing students to understand what they are learning and why it matters. This philosophy respects multiple forms of intelligence and helps students connect ideas across disciplines, making learning feel relevant and engaging.

The school also draws deeply from its surrounding community. Outdoor education, neighborhood exploration, and experiential learning are woven into the school day, allowing students to connect classroom concepts with the world around them. When students understand the purpose behind their work, they are more willing to take risks, persist through challenge, and take ownership of their learning.

Equally important is the emotional foundation that supports academic growth. Madrona places a strong emphasis on safety, trust, and authentic connection. Staff members are selected for their professional expertise and ability to build meaningful relationships with students. Once children feel safe enough to be themselves confidence begins to grow, peer relationships strengthen, and learning follows naturally.

Support at Madrona extends beyond students to include families as active partners. Regular coffee mornings and community gatherings offer parents space to connect, share experiences, and feel less alone in raising neurodivergent children. These initiatives are supported by the school team, including Julee Baker, administrative and community engagement coordinator, who helps foster open communication and a strong sense of belonging among families.

Madrona sees itself as a stepping-stone school, preparing students for their transition into high school and beyond. Readiness is defined by self-awareness, confidence, and the ability to advocate for oneself.
