Rooted in Community, Driven by Purpose
“I call myself the proudest superintendent on Earth” It’s more than a tagline—it’s how I lead. At Alpine Union, we deliver a world-class education with a small-town spirit. I know virtually every staff member, student, and most families. That personal connection informs every decision we make.
My journey in education began in the classroom as a Teach For America corps member and Fulbright Fellow. I helped lead the nation’s largest education leadership initiative at The Wallace Foundation and later served as Director of Innovation for a large urban district in central San Diego .I was honored with a Career Achievement Award from the University of San Diego and have worked across the entire K–12 continuum—from the classroom to school and district leadership, higher education, and national initiatives.
Today, no two days as superintendent are the same. Whether teaching a class, staffing a lunch line, or mowing a lawn, I show up with heart, flexibility, and commitment.
In education, even your best day isn’t a finish line—it’s the starting point for tomorrow. That’s what makes the work meaningful. And that’s why I show up every day—proud and ready.
Meeting Today’s Challenges with Innovation and Heart
One of our biggest priorities is supporting student mental health. Post-COVID, we’ve seen rises in anxiety, depression, and trauma. In response, we’ve embedded wellness into daily life—social workers at every site, classroom wellness spaces, and a 24/7 crisis line for students.
Teacher recruitment is another key focus. To support our duallanguage immersion program, we’ve partnered with the Embassy of Spain to bring educators to Alpine, ensuring high-quality, consistent staffing from TK through 8th grade.
We’ve also begun tackling the housing crisis. As the first district in San Diego County to offer faculty housing, we now have teachers living where they work—creating deeper community connections.
With ongoing financial uncertainty, we’ve aggressively pursued grant funding—securing millions to support innovation, enrichment, and stability.
We’ve embraced technology to modernize education. Every teacher in our district has been trained to use AI to enhance planning, assessment, and instruction. And we’ve expanded services year-round, turning our schools into full-service hubs offering tutoring, enrichment, and extended care, including during winter and summer breaks.
Our investments in Career and Technical Education are growing too, from award-winning engineering programs to financial literacy and an upcoming eSports initiative.
To better serve all students, we’ve strengthened our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), blending academic, behavioral, and emotional supports into one cohesive structure.
We face real challenges but meet them with creativity, commitment, and care for every student and staff member.
Leading with Trust, Compassion, and Purpose
Transparency builds trust, especially in challenging moments. Being honest— even when answers are complex or uncomfortable—earns more respect than avoiding tough conversations. I live by this advice: always choose clarity over comfort.
“One of our top priorities is student mental health. Post-COVID, we’ve seen increases in anxiety, depression, and trauma. In response, we’ve embedded wellness into daily life— mental health staff at every site, wellness centers and spaces at each school and in classrooms, and a 24/7 crisis line for students”
Every challenge has a story— whether it’s a struggling student, a concerned parent, or a staffing issue. Leading with empathy helps us make better decisions.
I often remind my team: seek to understand before acting. Different isn’t always better—better is better.
Relationships come first. Education is a soft science. Students won’t always remember their grades, but they’ll remember how we made them feel. The same is true for teachers, parents, and staff. Trust is the foundation of any thriving school or community.
Listening is also about leadership. People don’t just want to be heard— they want to be understood. We often rush to solve problems, but not everything needs an immediate answer. Sometimes, the best approach is to pause and buy time.
And finally, celebrate the small wins. In education, there’s no million-dollar sale moment. But a kind word, a breakthrough, a smile— the victories that carry us forward. The little things often become the big things.
AI, Technology, and Modern Education Challenges
Artificial intelligence is the top trend in education today. Instead of fearing it, we focus on harnessing its power. Initially, staff were weary of AI - seing it as a shortcut or perhaps cheating, but after training, they recognized its value in enhancing lesson planning and student learning. AI is here to stay and must be used thoughtfully.
Of course, education doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Politics and union dynamics, especially in California, also impact schools. Balancing these while keeping students the priority is essential.
Technology can elevate learning, but it also poses challenges. Smartphones, in particular, have impacted student focus and behavior. Our implementation of a no-phone policy during school hours has led to more engaged, focused learners—and improved mental health.
In today’s world, news spreads faster than ever—often on social media before staff are even aware. That means educators must respond to issues not just with urgency, but with clarity, consistency, and care.
