The True Purpose of Leadership

I began my career as a primary and physical education teacher in Portugal in the year 2000. Working across Europe, Asia and Latin America reinforced my belief that education has the power to transform lives, communities and futures. It also taught me that while the cultures in each place might be different, all schools share the same purpose of helping young people thrive and creating opportunities that last a lifetime.

Leadership is a temporary responsibility entrusted to us for a season. Schools existed before we arrived and will continue long after we leave. Our role is not to build a personal legacy but to strengthen the institution for future generations of students, staff and the community. Leadership is temporary, but its impact endures.

Building Trust through Transparency

Accountability begins with trust, transparency and honesty. I strive to lead by example and foster collaboration among staff and parents. My goal is to develop future leaders rather than create followers by balancing academic, operational, financial and people responsibilities without losing sight of the school’s purpose.

Every community is different, and expectations vary across cultures and environments. Schools must first understand the communities they serve and the expectations parents have of them. By being transparent about where the school is today and where it wants to be, they can build trust and encourage parents to embrace the journey alongside them.

Defining Success beyond Academic Results

Academic achievement remains important, and schools have many tools to measure it. However, educational success extends beyond academic results alone. I truly believe we are not just educating students. We are shaping our future.

I look closely at the competencies students develop, how confidently they communicate, how they present ideas, engage in projects and understand the world around them. Equally important are values like responsibility and kindness, because education is about more than academic achievement alone.

Innovation that Supports Purposeful Learning

When people talk about innovation today, the conversation often turns immediately to AI. I believe AI is part of our reality and something educators need to understand and embrace, even as we continue learning how to use it effectively. Teachers and school leaders are learners as well.

Innovation should always serve a purpose. Schools should not pursue it simply for marketing or appearances. Innovation means finding better ways to improve learning, strengthen wellbeing, increase sustainability, develop people and prepare students for an increasingly complex world. Sometimes that may involve technology, but it can also mean returning to practical skills and fundamentals that students may otherwise overlook.

Leadership as Stewardship

My advice to current and aspiring school leaders is to remember that leadership is stewardship. Schools are entrusted to us for a period of time, and our responsibility is to serve the students and communities that will remain long after we leave.

Management, operations and finance all matter, but they should never come at the expense of learning. The classroom should remain at the heart of every decision. Budgets, facilities, operations and strategy matter because they support teaching and learning.

Finally, invest in people. The quality of a school will never exceed the quality of the people within it. Some of my proudest moments have come from watching colleagues grow into outstanding leaders themselves.
