Tom Rogerson, HeadmasterThrough boarding life, pastoral care and a broad curriculum, Cottesmore helps children feel known, secure and confident in who they are. From the outset, the school focuses on creating a genuine sense of belonging through kindness, shared routines and close daily support.
“We know we are succeeding when children leave Cottesmore more independent, emotionally grounded, resilient and confident and ready for the next stage of education and life,” says Tom Rogerson, headmaster.
A True Home-from-Home
Daily life at Cottesmore is built around a genuine family-style boarding community where children and adults share the rhythms of the day. From the moment students arrive, they are known closely, welcomed warmly and supported consistently by staff who work together to help every child feel secure. Children settle naturally into shared routines, gradually becoming more confident, secure and independent.
Shared meals, prep time and evenings in the boarding house bring children together across age groups, helping friendships develop naturally and strengthening community. This encourages children to take responsibility for themselves and the community around them.
From organising themselves for lessons to contributing within the boarding house, students manage increasing levels of autonomy. Over time, children who may once have been tentative become happier, more self-assured and increasingly confident in themselves and others.
Student voice structures like the Kindness Council and Happiness Charter ensure children are heard and involved in shaping their community.
From Early Understanding to Exploration and Opportunity
Pastoral care is woven naturally into daily boarding life at Cottesmore. Tutors and matrons work together to monitor the well-being of each child. From day one, they take a deliberate and personal approach to understanding students.
Through baseline assessments, classroom observation and daily interaction, staff build a close understanding of every pupil’s strengths, interests and emerging potential. This helps identify early patterns across academic and boarding life, including aptitude for problem solving, confidence in sport, creativity in the arts or curiosity in design, coding and technology. These insights are shared across staff to ensure each child is seen as a whole person.

Underpinning much of school life is Cottesmore’s philosophy of ‘The Art of And,’ the belief that children can be many things at once; scholarly and sporty, artistic and analytical, thoughtful and exuberant. Across boarding life, academics and pastoral care, it shapes the school’s wider approach by placing equal value on ambition and well-being, confidence and kindness, achievement and happiness. Rather than narrowing strengths too early, it encourages children to explore different interests.
Its curriculum and co-curricular programme give children the opportunity to refine talents across academics, sport, music, drama, design, technology and digital creativity. Specialist teaching and varied experiences allow children to grow naturally while discovering new strengths.
Shaping the Path Ahead
Preparation for entrance tests and scholarships at Cottesmore is rigorous, supportive and tailored to each child. Progress is closely monitored through internal assessments, scholarship outcomes and senior school destinations.
Students progress with a stronger sense of readiness, independence and direction, reflected in destinations such as Eton College and Marlborough College, alongside a growing number of scholarship offers. Cottesmore actively seeks feedback from senior schools on how well its pupils settle, contribute and thrive once they arrive. Recognition for boarding, pastoral care and pupil well-being reflects the consistency of this philosophy across school life.
Parents often notice striking changes in their children’s happiness, confidence and sense of security after joining the school. Over time, they notice growing maturity as children become more organised, resilient and self-reliant. Pupils leave Cottesmore academically prepared, happier, self-assured and comfortable in who they are.
