Designed to provide early exposure without the pressure to specialize, its programs reflect how families often introduce children to a range of activities to help them discover their interests over time.
How are the program tracks structured to support exploration across robotics, coding, and making?
Its current offerings center on two core tracks: robotics and coding, and hands-on making through The Inventors Club. Weekly sessions run 60 to 90 minutes in six- to eight-week cycles, allowing families to rotate between programs across seasons, with school break and summer camps extending the experience throughout the year.

Silva established Built By Me in 2017 to turn his lifelong vision of working with children into a reality. What began as a small initiative has since evolved into a growing learning center and makerspace working with schools, recreation departments and community organizations across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.

Why does the program emphasize the four C’s in hands-on STEM learning environments?
Built By Me approaches STEM as a set of activities that give children opportunities to exercise creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. In this setting, STEM becomes a way for children to explore ideas while building confidence through hands-on execution.

Our goal is to help young minds discover their interests early and build confidence through hands-on exploration.
The Inventors Club, a weekly guided program focused on individual creation, offers a contrasting experience. Each week, children build a different gadget and learn the science behind how it works, taking the finished project home. With no screens involved, the emphasis shifts to tactile learning and imagination. These sessions often spark follow-up questions like why a circuit works, how motion is created and what makes a mechanism more efficient?
Across both formats, children are encouraged to present their work at the end of each session, describing what they built and how they approached the task.
Built By Me’s low-pressure class environment supports personal growth, particularly for children still developing social confidence. In one instance, a girl who joined the robotics program initially appeared hesitant to engage with peers, rarely making eye contact or participating in discussions. In the early sessions, instructors adjusted participation within the class structure, allowing her to begin independently before gradually integrating into group work.
As she began to understand the coding component and saw her builds respond to her inputs, she became more comfortable engaging as her confidence grew through hands-on progress. By the final weeks, she was not only actively participating in group discussions but also helping classmates troubleshoot their projects.
Scaling with Intention
In what way does small class size influence instruction quality and student engagement?
Built By Me maintains small class sizes. Instructors closely observe how each child engages with the curriculum and assist them when needed. Team members are selected through strict hiring criteria based on prior experience working with children, including formal teaching backgrounds where applicable. They undergo rigorous training in both technical delivery and classroom management, including collaboration, behavior observation and conflict resolution.
For the future, it aims to strengthen its presence across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. Partnerships with schools and recreation centers remain central to this effort, helping make exploratory STEM learning accessible to more children and families.
