A Heritage of Classroom Innovation
VS has exclusively focused on educational spaces throughout its history. In the late 1800s, hygiene was paramount because of the many infectious diseases at the time. The Rettig bench, designed by architect Wilhelm Rettig, addressed these challenges with a bench design that could be turned on its side, allowing classrooms to be cleaned easily and thoroughly. Over time, these ideas evolved into flip-and-stack tables and chairs that suspend from desktops. The change transformed traditional classrooms into environments that are suited for both collaboration and quiet study.

Materials such as LIGNOdur, a tabletop made from compressed beech wood shavings pressed under heat, were developed to offer extremely durable and scratch-proof surfaces. Danish architect and designer Verner Panton, renowned for his innovative and elegant cantilever seating designs, introduced styles that combined comfort with elegance. Ergonomics researcher Dr. Dieter Breithecker studied how movement influences learning and collaborated with VS to design seating that promotes healthy posture and keeps students engaged.

Recognizing that traditional classrooms limited teaching flexibility, VS America partnered with educator and designer David A. Stubbs II on the Shift+ collection, a modular system that adapts to evolving teaching methods. It gives teachers and students the freedom to move furniture, form areas for group work or individual study and modify layouts to match their teaching and learning goals.
To help educators make the most of these flexible classrooms, VS America joins forces with school leaders and teachers. Jill Ackers, who leads the firm’s education department, conducts collaborative workshops, planning sessions, and evaluation tools to help educators align space and pedagogy.
