Stephen Ambrose, FounderThe late Stephen Ambrose, one of America's most respected historians, took that responsibility to heart. He believed that history should be lived, not just learned, and in effect founded the Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours to bring his belief to life.
Through immersive, expertly guided tours, the organization takes travelers beyond the books and into the heart of history—Normandy beaches, Bastogne forests, and Pacific battlefields—where the echoes of war are still felt. For some, these journeys are a way to connect with the past; for others, they are a chance to grieve, reflect, and find closure for a loss that time never quite healed.
Understanding the nuance, the touring company combines scholarly storytelling with an immersive and moving battlefield experience. Each tour is crafted with consideration for every traveler and includes all expected amenities and services.
“Whether someone is inspired by the TV series Band of Brothers, driven by academic curiosity, or retracing the footsteps of a relative who served, we ensure that their experience feels meaningful,” says Talia Ambrose, president.
At the core of its work is a deep commitment to personal connection. From the first phone call, guests are guided by expert representatives to understand logistical restrictions and, more importantly, the motivation behind the traveler's interest. The team works closely with each guest to select the tour that best reflects their journey, ensuring that the level of care continues from planning to the experience on the ground.

Tours are organized into categories—World War II in Europe, WWII in the Pacific, Civil War, U.S. history, and military history—allowing guests to choose between broad overviews or specific campaigns or units. One of the most popular is the Band of Brothers tour, which follows Easy Company’s European campaign.
Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours' flagship, the D-Day to the Rhine tour, still follows the original itinerary developed by the founder himself. Covering the Allied campaign from June 6, 1944, to May 8, 1945, it takes guests through key locations such as London, Normandy, the Netherlands, and the Ardennes. Along the way, historians read letters and journal entries written by soldiers who were there, often standing in the very place those words describe. A similar experience is imparted in other pivotal chapters, like the Italian Campaign or the Pacific Island Battles of 1944.
Such efforts don’t stop at content. The personalized stories of the travelers or their relatives are incorporated into the tour narrative wherever possible. One guest, Betty Benton, flew to Iwo Jima to honor a relative who had served there. Recognizing the importance, the team arranged a window seat for her flight, allowing her to view the island from above—a simple but touching gesture.
Building on this legacy, the next generation leadership and the team are developing new tours in North Africa and Northern Italy. Now, the Pacific package is extended to cover Guadalcanal and the Philippines.
Still, at its core, Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours remains faithful to its founding mission: taking travelers to walk the ground, listen to the voices of those who lived it, and help them connect the past with the present, lest they forget it.
