This year’s transformation—from Houston Community College to Houston City College—was far more than a new name. It was a reaffirmation of purpose, a signal that the college is embracing the pace of change that is shaping our region. It reflects the energy of our students, the diversity of our communities and our determination to stay at the forefront of higher education.
Education as Strategic Infrastructure
At HCC, we view education as a strategic infrastructure, as essential to our population as transportation, energy or technology. Across our region’s leading industries—health care, energy, logistics, digital technology, and advanced manufacturing—we have worked to rethink our programs to meet the demands of a rapidly changing economy. We are not alone in this endeavor. We have formed partnerships with workforce boards and industry leaders, working together to ensure the classroom experience we offer translates into real-world readiness.
This is no small task. Houston City College serves more than 95,000 students on our campuses and online. Nearly half represent the first in their families to pursue higher education, and most must balance college with work and family. Their success fuels Houston’s growth, which is why our innovations must advance not simply to change for their own sake but to fuel a well-prepared workforce.
To meet students where they are, we are expanding technology-enabled learning to make it accessible, flexible and relevant. Our enhanced online ecosystem provides around-the-clock tutoring, virtual advising and interactive coursework. Our “micro-credentials” and short-term certificates allow working adults to upskill quickly and move forward in their careers. We are also opening new pathways with programs in data analytics, cybersecurity and AI to ensure that our graduates can take part fully in the workforce of tomorrow.
Leading the Way
This transformation was central to our rebranding and continuing leadership. HCC is the first college in Texas to offer an associate degree in AI and the first in the U.S. to launch a bachelor’s degree in applied AI and robotics. This is attracting notice, including major technology partners like Google – which recently pledged a $2 million investment. This is allowing us to hire faculty in AI and strengthen the region’s talent pipeline

This new chapter strengthens our mission to open doors, remove barriers and equip every learner with the skills to lead in a rapidly changing world.
At HCC, we are reimagining what higher education looks like with a philosophy that is simple: education is not a moment, it is a continuum. Our forward-looking programs not only remove barriers and expand opportunities for students to achieve their individual goals, they are also fueling a stronger, more innovative city and region.
