Professional Journey: Knowledge Meets Leadership

Mr. Tarno’s career began in 2007 in classrooms supporting students with significant cognitive disabilities and autism. Those early experiences shaped his belief that inclusion, when done with intention, benefits every learner. As he transitioned into district leadership, he focused on Autism programming, behavior intervention and secondary transition, developing systems that helped educators deliver consistent, high-quality support.

"Lead with grace and compassion. When you consider every variable, you’ll always find a path forward."

At Georgia Cyber Academy, he leads a large team serving nearly 2,000 students with disabilities. His focus is on building frameworks that make special education both responsive and sustainable—balancing compliance with creativity and empathy. Each initiative reflects his central philosophy: when educators have clarity, resources and trust, students thrive.

Key Lessons: Compassion-Driven Strategy

With nearly two decades of experience in special education, Tarno has learned that strong relationships form the foundation of meaningful leadership. He believes success depends on more than compliance or data; it requires listening to families, mentoring teachers and understanding each student as an individual. Guided by his principle, “I lead with grace and compassion, always considering the variables,” he approaches leadership with empathy, flexibility and a deep sense of accountability.

Quality and Consistency: Driving Effective Services

At Georgia Cyber Academy, Tarno leads a department distinguished by its 94.4 LEA Determination score—a reflection of both excellence and consistency. He drives quality by ensuring every IEP is thoughtfully aligned with student needs and by broadening access to teletherapy and assistive technology. His leadership extends to continuous professional development in virtual instruction and the integration of real-time progress monitoring, empowering educators to adapt strategies and deliver truly personalized support.

Bringing Communication Clarity: Collaboration through the IEP Process

Tarno views the Individualized Education Program (IEP) as a true partnership. He fosters collaboration by bringing teachers, families and service providers into shared ownership of each student’s plan. Under his guidance, IEP meetings move beyond compliance to become meaningful conversations where every voice matters. Colleagues describe him as a leader who encourages innovation and trust, while families value the openness and clarity he brings to every interaction.

Virtual Education: Family and Student Feedback

Family and student input sits at the heart of Tarno’s leadership. In conversations with prospective families, he underscores Georgia Cyber Academy’s commitment to personalized learning, often sharing that he is “passionate about creating learning experiences that empower every student, regardless of their needs.” He and his team actively gather feedback through surveys, parent-mentor partnerships and ongoing dialogue during IEP meetings. That continuous exchange informs program decisions and ensures students receive the support they need to thrive in a virtual setting.

Regulations at Work: Improving Student Growth

Under Tarno’s leadership, adherence to IDEA and state regulations remains uncompromising. He has built systems that weave compliance into everyday practice through streamlined documentation, digital audit tools and internal monitoring frameworks. Beyond meeting mandates, his department turns policy into practical support that drives student growth and strengthens the experience of families.

Transforming Schools: Simple Ideas, Big Results

Tarno believes that clear, unifying themes inspire purposeful work when aligned with a school’s strategic vision. After joining Georgia Cyber Academy, he saw the need for a shared message that could focus staff energy and strengthen collective purpose. From that insight emerged the annual Department Theme Initiative, now recognized as one of GCA’s most impactful internal innovations.

In its first year, the theme “Shift Happens!” helped staff navigate change with optimism and renewed focus on student-centered outcomes, leading to smoother departmental transitions. The following year’s theme, “All Means All!” brought general and special education teams together around the principles of equity and inclusion, fostering stronger collaboration and accountability.

Now entering his third year, Tarno has introduced the 2025–2026 theme, “Collaborate, Innovate, Educate.” Unveiled during in-person professional development sessions in Athens, Georgia, it aligns with the district’s five-year strategic plan and challenges staff to work across departments, think creatively and keep students at the center of every decision.

Through this initiative, Tarno has shown that simple, consistent themes, anchored in a clear vision, can shape culture, strengthen engagement and elevate both teaching and learning.

Leadership Lessons: Balancing Empathy and Accountability

When asked what guidance he would offer to emerging leaders, Tarno points to two enduring principles: lead through relationships and balance compliance with compassion. While data, programs and systems provide structure, he believes lasting impact stems from genuine investment in students, teachers and families. He lives that philosophy each day by mentoring staff and cultivating spaces where empathy informs strategy.

His message to future leaders is simple yet profound: “Lead with grace and compassion. When you consider every variable, you’ll always find a path forward.”

Looking ahead, he plans to strengthen digital tools and professional development while deepening cross-department collaboration to bring that vision to life. Tarno’s goal is to build systems that move beyond compliance to genuinely enrich the lives of students and their families.
