Foundational Experiences and Career Evolution

I began my career as an educator in Compton, where I built a strong foundation in equitable teaching practices. Those early experiences ignited my passion for creating inclusive classrooms that prioritize the needs of historically marginalized students. This passion inspired my transition into leadership roles, where I could amplify the impact of equity-driven practices on a broader scale.

As a leader, I focused on designing culturally responsive curricula, providing professional development for educators and building partnerships to enhance educational pathways. Collaborating with institutions like California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), I contributed to innovative programs, such as a three-year BA in Mental Health and pathways for Wellness Coaches. My efforts also extended to initiatives like the “Equity is Empathy” Conference and anti-bias training programs in partnership with the National Equity Project. These initiatives aimed to create safe and inclusive campus environments for all.

Strategies for Curriculum Design Amid Changing Standards

At San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD), I prioritize adaptability and collaboration to address evolving educational standards and policies. Our 1-to-1 technology initiative ensures every student has access to tools that personalize learning and close achievement gaps. Platforms like Xello for career exploration and i-Ready for data-driven instruction enable us to integrate equity, career readiness and 21st-century skills into our curriculum.

Technology serves as a cornerstone for personalizing instruction, enabling differentiated learning and providing immersive experiences like virtual labs. These strategies ensure that our curriculum remains relevant, inclusive and aligned with both industry and societal demands.

Equipping Educators for Modern Classrooms

At SMUSD, professional development is designed to align with the dynamic needs of education, focusing on technology integration, culturally responsive teaching and data-informed decision-making. I rely on surveys, classroom observations and performance data to design training programs that are tailored to teachers’ specific needs.

Workshops and professional learning communities (PLCs) offer educators hands-on opportunities to explore innovative tools and techniques. These initiatives emphasize inclusivity, addressing topics such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility, to ensure teachers are fully equipped to meet the diverse needs of their students.

The Role of Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PBL) is a cornerstone of our curriculum at SMUSD, promoting critical thinking, collaboration and real[1]world problem-solving.

"Our 1-to-1 technology initiative ensures that every student has access to tools that personalize learning and close achievement gaps. Using platforms like Xello for career exploration and i-Ready for data-driven instruction, we embed equity, career readiness and 21st-century skills into our curriculum."

We integrate PBL into pathways like pre-apprenticeships and dual enrollment, aligning academic standards with career readiness. By reflecting students’ cultural backgrounds and aspirations, PBL fosters deeper engagement and equity.

To support PBL, I ensure that teachers receive professional development focused on scaffolding projects, incorporating student voices and using collaborative technology. Regular assessments help maintain equitable outcomes, empowering all students to excel.

STEM and STEAM Integration

STEM principles are woven into SMUSD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, preparing students for the future workforce. From engineering to health sciences, students participate in hands-on projects that develop technical and critical-thinking skills. Partnerships with businesses and higher education institutions enhance these pathways by offering mentorships, internships and dual-enrollment opportunities.

As a 1-to-1 district, we use technology like CAD software and virtual labs to enrich STEM learning. Programs such as the pre-apprenticeship in construction combine STEM concepts with career-relevant skills, ensuring students graduate prepared for the workforce.

The Future of Curriculum and Instruction

Technological advancements present exciting opportunities to enhance curriculum and instruction. At SMUSD, we integrate emerging tools like AI, virtual reality and robotics to foster critical thinking, adaptability and collaboration. These innovations align with our district’s Portrait of a Graduate competencies, ensuring students gain the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

• Build Networks: Cultivate relationships with educators, community members and industry leaders to share and refine ideas.

• Balance Vision with Action: Start with small, measurable changes while keeping long-term goals in focus.

By implementing these strategies, curriculum leaders can drive transformative change, ensuring schools remain innovative, inclusive and responsive to student needs.

Throughout my career, rooted in equity and innovation, I have learned that transformative education requires a steadfast commitment to collaboration, adaptability and inclusivity.

At SMUSD, these principles guide our efforts to create a future where every student can thrive, equipped with the skills and opportunities to lead with purpose and resilience.
