In an interview with Education Insider, Meinert shared insights on his career trajectory, hands-on approach to administration, leadership and delivering world-class education.
Transforming Education in Alaska’s Heartland
I have been in the educational sector for two decades. My journey began in the Aleutians East Borough School District, a rural school district in the Aleutian Islands. I worked there for eight years as a teacher before transitioning to an administrative role.
I relocated to Fairbanks to join the Yukon-Koyukuk School District, which spans 11 remote villages across Alaska’s interior and operates one of the largest homeschool programs. Over the years, I held multiple leadership roles, including principal, technology coordinator and assistant superintendent.
I joined the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District five years ago, initially serving as assistant superintendent of secondary schools and then taking on the role of superintendent.
Alaska is considered an urban district with 29 schools across the borough. It encompasses both large, urban high schools and small rural campuses. Our district has about 12,000 students. We’ve focused on building a stronger foundation for student success, enhancing literacy across grade levels, fostering meaningful family partnerships and driving sustained improvements in graduation rates.
Creating Pathways to Success
One of the most influential roles I’ve held in education was serving as a technology director. Technical problems are easier to solve than people problems. I approach every situation with the belief that a solution exists. The real breakthrough happens when people come together to solve problems as a community.
Much of my career in education has been rooted in rural communities. I’ve worked relentlessly to ensure that every student, regardless of their zip code, has access to high-quality educational experiences on par with those in urban areas.
We launched a dual enrollment middle college university program that enables students to graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree. By eliminating gatekeepers in Algebra and AP courses, we boosted first-year Algebra 1 pass rates by 10 percent, strengthening graduation prospects and fueling richer high school experiences.
Elevating Indigenous Voices in Education Policy
Alaska Native students make up 25 percent of our Fairbanks student body. To honor their voices, we’ve embedded local tribes and Alaska Native leaders into every decision-making process. This past year, in partnership with the Fairbanks Native Association, we created a dedicated Alaska Native advisory seat on our school board and appointed their executive director.
Her transformative presence now shapes our policies, budget priorities and district-wide initiatives, ensuring that we consistently champion what’s best for Alaska Native students.
Purpose Driven Innovation
While considering technology, ensure that it aligns with your strategic plans or goals. AI is transforming education. Our board introduced a new AI policy to ensure that students learn to use AI in school and in the workplace as well.
I embrace various technological educational communication tools. One of my favorite tools is podcasting. I launched a podcast called Dr. Luke Meinert Alaska EdVenture, where I record a podcast every couple of weeks. It amplifies local voices and offers an inside look at our schools and district initiatives.
Word of Advice for Peers
Leadership matters. Every successful organization hosts great leaders. Act with urgency. Students rarely get a second chance at education. That’s why we must be relentless in addressing challenges and creating environments where every student can thrive.
