Mr. Mike, Assistant Principal and Arlene Velazquez, PrincipalBlue Horizon School Academy serves both neurodivergent and neurotypical students in an inclusive learning environment where every child is valued and supported. Its neurotypical students play an important role as positive peer models, helping foster meaningful social interactions, empathy and friendships throughout the school community. They also receive a high-quality, standards-based education using a grade-level curriculum designed to challenge and prepare them for future academic success.
It was purpose-built to create the kind of learning environment many students cannot access in traditional schools. Recognizing that every child learns differently, instruction is individualized to meet each student's unique strengths, needs and learning pace. Whether a student requires additional support or performs at or above grade level, teachers provide differentiated instruction.

Turning Support into a Coordinated Experience
Rather than relying on age-based placement, the school evaluates each student's educational readiness and skill level before determining classroom placement. This helps ensure that children are learning alongside peers operating at a similar level and reduces the frustration that can occur when students are placed in environments that do not reflect their current learning readiness.
Behavioral challenges are often a part of a student's difficulties making timely support an essential part of the learning environment. Based on each student's individual and behavioral needs, some students attend school with their own Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), who serves as a Private Instructional Personnel (PIP). These RBTs are assigned by a private agency. The RBT provides real-time behavioral support and intervention while collaborating with school staff to promote the student's success. When appropriate, students may transition to a designated calming space to self-regulate before returning to the classroom, allowing learning to continue with minimal disruption while supporting the student's behavioral and emotional needs.

At Blue Horizon School Academy, students who qualify, have access to occupational therapy and speech therapy services during the school day, allowing them to receive therapeutic support without missing valuable instructional time or requiring additional appointments after school. These services are provided by independent, third-party therapy providers who work collaboratively with staff to support student success.

Measuring Progress through Individualized Support
Every student receives an Individualized Student Plan (ISP), which serves a similar purpose to an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The ISP includes the student's demographic information, individualized accommodations, present levels of performance, annual goals and the supports and services needed to promote success. Throughout the school year, student progress is continuously monitored by the classroom teacher, lead teacher, and, when applicable, the student's Private Instructional Personnel (PIP), speech therapist and occupational therapist.
Each student is formally reassessed annually using standardized assessments and ongoing classroom data to measure growth and identify areas of continued need. A comparison report is completed to document the student's progress and guide the development of new individualized goals.
Classroom placement is based on each student's individual instructional level rather than chronological age or grade level. Assessment results and data collected throughout the year are carefully reviewed to determine the learning environment that will best support the student's academic, social, behavioral and functional growth. This individualized approach enables targeting skill gaps effectively while providing every student with the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed at their own pace.
Technology complements this individualized approach through interactive Smart Boards, and 2 different Learning System curriculums that help students participate more fully in learning.
Extending Support beyond the School Day
Leadership remains closely involved in day-to-day operations, helping reinforce a culture where every decision begins with the child. Staff members keep students comfortable and engaged enough to learn. Parents are also kept informed through direct communication channels, monthly activity calendars, social media updates and school events that encourage participation. Families are also invited to share ideas and feedback, reinforcing the strong partnerships between educators and parents.
That commitment extends beyond the classroom through community outings and field trips. These opportunities allow them to experience new environments while engaging meaningfully with peers.
Since opening its current campus, Blue Horizon School Academy has grown to continuously meet the needs of families seeking a high-quality, inclusive educational environment. For the 2026–2027 school year, the school is adding a Pre-K program to its existing Kindergarten through 5th grade offerings.
Looking ahead, it is committed to continued growth. It envisions expanding its educational program through 12th grade, allowing students and their families to remain part of a supportive, inclusive learning community throughout their academic journey.
At its core, Blue Horizon School Academy is working to become a new standard for neurodiverse and neurotypical education—one that reaches more children, supports more families and helps communities better understand that meaningful support is available.
